Asbestos Problem Cleared
The Old Town High School wrestling team is one step closer to resuming its normal schedule now that asbestos concerns at its practice facility have been addressed. Since asbestos was found in the Herbert Sargent Community Center, where the team practices, the team has been unable to practice or use its mat because of concerns it might be contaminated. The team has been practicing with the Brewer High School team. On Dec. 13 and 14, County Abatement Inc. eliminated the asbestos at the community center. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has also inspected the facility, which has been cleared for use since the abatement, as per a city official. "DEP has said there's nothing that the city should have done," Old Town City Manager Peggy Daigle said. "We took extra precaution [in calling for the inspection] just because we know that people have fears about asbestos and we felt it was the prudent thing to do". Old Town Athletic Director Greg Thibodeau believes that the team will have the mat cleaned in time for it to host a meet as scheduled on Jan. 3.
